Conga! Conga! Conga!
‘Conga! Conga! Conga!’ was developed by myself and 2 others for the GMTK 2021 game jam with the prompt ‘Joined Together’. I designed an unconventional concept, birthing a snake-like match 3 game infused with the spirit of a lively conga line.
In essence the player must swerve a conga line of dancers in coloured shirts while avoiding the crowd or staff. Strategic swapping of line participants allows players to align three identical shirt colours, earning points amidst the chaos.
In the 48-hour development sprint, I spearheaded the game's design, while my collaborators focused on programming and sound. Using Aesprite to create the all the sprite work in the game, ensuring to create clear illustrations to the player. In addition I gave in-engine aid, tweak game balance and commanding design decisions to ensure the game adhered to the my vision.
I gleaned invaluable lessons from the jam; the fluidity of dancer swapping while controlling the movement could be further refined to prevent distraction from the primary objective. For me ‘Conga! Conga! Conga!’ conveys my innovation in design while imperfect, it embodies experimentation and unique gameplay experiences.
