Switch

"Switch" emerges from a week-long creative sprint during a university game jam, sparked by the theme 'Light & Dark'. In this platformer developed in Game Maker Studio 2, the player can flip their surroundings between black and white, revealing different platforms and navigating a world that challenges intellect as much as reflexes.

Inspired by the contrast of black and white, I honed in on simplicity as a guiding principle. Limiting the palette to two colours not only served the thematic essence but also streamlined the platforming experience, transforming it into a puzzle of perception. By utilising simple shapes and a monochrome pallete, I could focus on intricate level design, wherein every switch revealed new pathways and challenges.

From this experience I learned that sometimes the best deigns decisions lie in its fusion of mechanics and aesthetics. I added time to add juice to the game in the way of squash and stretch, camera shake, visual fidelity and sound design. "Switch" embodies my dedication to thoughtful game design and aesthetic cohesion. Its reception, including encouraging feedback from lecturers, fuels my enthusiasm to explore its potential further, potentially expanding it into a fully-fledged gaming experience with added polish and depth.
